The unique climate on the plateau above the Byway produces luscious apples and berries.
Taste the Sweetness of the Byway!
Over one dozen orchards and berry farms hug the rolling hills in Bayfield County. Many of these growers are Travel Green Wisconsin or Certified Organic members. Their commitment to growing some of the tastiest fruit in the state is equaled by their love of the land. How can such delicious and delicate fruits such as apples, blueberries, raspberries and strawberries grow in this far northern climate? Lake Superior’s water temperature averages about 40 degrees, and the lake rarely freezes over. This moderates the temperature, keeping extreme hot and cold variations in check…and provides an environment that’s perfect for producing delectable, natural treats. Traveling between the orchards and berry farms in season is a tasty pastime and a scenic delight. The culmination of the harvest season is the annual Apple Festival held in Bayfield, where the emphasis is on homegrown, hometown fun!
